Refashion friday: Changeable straps flip flop tutorial

In spring and summer my feet are definitely most comfortable in flip flops, but they can get a little boring. With just a little refashioning you can turn your flip flops into some cute sandals for an extremely low price!

The inspiration for these sandals came from this.

Ready to make your own pair? I'm sure you have at least one pair of flip flops you'd like to experiment with. ;)

Supplies you'll need:
  • a pair of flip flops
  • faux leather
  • hot glue gun
  • knit or woven fabric

The first step is to cut the plastic straps off. You can do this with a regular pair of scissors. Don't freak out now! There is nothing wrong with cutting up your sandals. ;)

Now we're going to make the leather loops.
Cut 6 strips out of faux leather, each 1 in. x 10 in. If you don't have leather available cotton fabric will work just fine.
Fold each long edge of your strips to the middle and then fold in half. Top stitch.

Now fold each piece of leather in half to make a loop and poke them through the holes of the flip flops.
(Before you do this you may need to trim around the hole of the flip flop on the back so you'll have more room for your knot later on. An Xacto knife works well. Forgot to take a picture of this, sorry!)

Tie the leather under the flip flops into a tight knot. You want the loops on top to be about 1 1/2 in. tall.

Trim off the ends. Put some hot glue in the hole and press the knot down into it.

Repeat to make the other 5 loops. They should be looking like this.

All that's left is the straps! I chose to make mine out of knit fabric. I cut out long strips that measured 3 in. by 37 in. Notice that the edges curled up.

Hooray! You are ready to wear your new sandals!

Here are some steps for tying the straps.

There are endless options!

And, of course you can make more straps and change them out whenever you please.

Enjoy!

  10. Wow .... so quick and easy to make. I made for myself, my sister, my daughter in law and my 2 grand daughters. They all adore them and always change the straps to match what they are wearing at that moment. I also shared with my friends in church. Thank you very much.
